Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest certain calls from the official, echoing the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
